Please come to our one-year anniversary event. Thursday, June 7, 2018 (7:30 pm) is the fifth in our popular "Tokyo Humanities Cafe" series at "Good Heavens" bar in Shimo-kitazawa. If you've come to our previous events, you know the format - an informal, relaxed atmosphere, four fascinating talks, and great chips. Following audience requests for more time for questions, we are planning to try having three speakers this time (rather than the normal four). Our speakers this time are: - Maho Ikeda (University of Tokyo) – “No Room for Politics in Urban Governance: Distrust in the Representative System of Meiji Tokyo”
- Anne McKnight (Shirayuri College) – “In Search of Bygonese: Translating Akira Kurosawa”
- Martyn Smith (School of Oriental and African Studies, London) – “Sex, Sport and Shopping Like a Man: Japan and the Global 60s”

Talks are all pitched at a general audience, and there will be plenty of time to relax with a drink and meet other attendees. The talks will end around 9:30, although please free to hang around afterwards to talk to the speakers. Best of all, the event is entirely FREE (please just buy at least one drink at the bar). You can find more details, and photos of previous cafes, on our website .
**What is Tokyo Humanities? Founded in late 2016 to promote humanities study in Tokyo and encourage links between researchers and the public, we maintain an online calendar of lectures in Tokyo, a "cafe" series, and "Quick Questions" interviews with researchers. Check out our website.
